FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is used to transfer files between your computer and the web server. An FTP Client is the program that uses File Transfer Protocol. There are several FTP clients that are supported by all full-service web hosts. The following companies have a free trial of their FTP clients available for download:

Following are instructions for uploading your site using WS_FTP, CuteFTP and Fetch for Mac. Please note, many hosts may require different procedures, but these instructions will work for those web hosts recommended by Web Tutorial Zone.

WS_FTP 8 Pro - Connecting and Uploading

Before uploading files, configure your account: in the file menu click File select Connect.

On the right of the Assistance Center window, select the Create Site button.

Choose and type a name for the new account and click Next.

Type the nameofdomain.com without the www as the host address and click Next.

Enter the username and password assigned to you by your host. Click Next.

Chosse FTP for Server Type and set port to 21. Click Next.

Choose Automatic Detect for host type. Choose Passive Mode and click Finish.

Now the site is listed in the Assistance Center. Select this site and choose Edit.

Click the Startup category in the Edit Options and type public_html or www for the remote site folder, depending on your host. Click OK.

Configuration is complete. Choose the account you have just added and hit Connect.

Once you're connected, there will be a file called public_html or www. Upload your files here. Depending on your host, the file named index.html or default.html will be your home page.

CuteFTP - Version 4.x/5.x - Connecting and Uploading

Open Cute FTP and choose Site Manager from the File Manager Menu.

Click New.

Fill in the requested information. Your domain name without the www is your dmain name.

Set the FTP port to 21 and click Edit.

Under the General Tab, type public_html or www for the Default Remote directory, depending on your host. Click OK.

Click Connect.

Once you are connected, select the files you would like to upload, right click the selection and select upload.

Fetch - Version 4.0.3 - Connecting and Uploading (mac)

Open Fetch and enter the information requested. For Host, type your domain name without the www. Enter your username, password and click OK.

After logging in, double click to open the public_html or www folder, depending on your host.

After opening the folder, click Put Files.

Select the file to upload and click Choose.

When asked to confirm the file name to upload and save, click OK to continue uploading.

You will see the newly uploaded file in the directory.
